- Abstract
- The increasing importance of smoke inhalation as a concomitant injury in burned patients is generally recognised. This has instigated a programme of clinical and laboratory research in an endeavour to improve the early recognition of the condition by clinical means, backed up if possible by confirmatory laboratory tests. The aim ultimately is, by identifying at-risk patients earlier, to improve their clinical management and outcome. Those who survive hospital treatment require extensive follow-up to determine whether there is important residual pulmonary damage. Progress of a current research programme, conducted at Glasgow Royal Infirmary, is reported in this communication.
