- Abstract
- Over the past several years, efforts within the fire protection community have been focusing on the concept of performance-based design and its mainstream application. Performance-based design is attempted today on a limited basis through the 'equivalency' option found in most codes and standards. However, all the pieces needed to properly support his process are not in place. As a result a significant undertaking by both the designer and the enforcement authority is required, and the benefits associated with performance-based design are not optimized. This report represents the results of the Task Group's efforts since the White Paper. It presents a course of action for the NFPA to follow with regard to performance-based codes and standards.
