- The purpose of this booklet is to provide prospective candidates for the Fire Service with the history, tradition, organizations, and operation of a fire department and to depict the responsibilities and duties that he will perform as a successful firefighter. There is an increasing demand for new recruits in the Fire Service as rural and urban communities develop, propser, and expand. The obvious constant population increase each decade is a situation which becomes more and more acute and which contributed to the need for trained fire protection personnel.
