Abstract
The radiant energy decomposition of several cotton fabrics, untreated and treated with inorganic and organic fire-retardants, has been studied and compared with the slower thermal decomposition of the same fabrics. As the decomposition rate was increased, the resulting char/tar ratios decreased as evidenced by decreased char and increased total tar formation. The fabrics treated with organic materials yielded the greater increase intar formaiton with increased decomposition rate. In the radiant energy experiments the fabrics with inorganic treatments provided the greater decrease in total tar formation per unit area of exposed fabric surface.
