- Abstract
- The question of the safety of people in a large building from being overcome by smoke or caught in building collapse is a question of the alarm system and the movement of fire gases throughout the building and the growth of the fire beyond the room of origin. If fire starts in a room with people present, it is rare that they do not discover the fire, take steps to extinguish it and/or move rapidly out to safety. The exception is that the people are asleep or drunk. The people elsewhere in the building have to learn of the fire and take suitable steps to reach safety, and it is this latter problem that is addressed here.
