- Abstract
- Studies have been carried out on the effect of wind blowing across simulated ventilators in a one fifth scale model. Alcohol fires of different sizes were used to create layers of hot gases in a reservoir with a horizontal rectangular vent either with or without a chimney (kerb) on top. The layer depth and the carbon dioxide (CO₂) concentration in the exhaust gases through the vent were used to calculate the effective discharge coefficient of the vent. Any changes in the layer depths and the CO₂ concentration due to airflow were then used to estimate the effect of crosswind on the discharge coefficients. The results show that the effects due to crosswind depend on the thickness and the temperature of the hot gas layer, the height of the kerb, the aspect ratio of the vent and the air velocity.
