Abstract
The overall goals of this project were to quantify: 1) the net rate of production of combustible gases from cellular plastics and 2) the radiation from flames and smokes produced by cellular plastics. The initial emphasis was on analyses and a surprising, to us, amount of progress was made. A key dimensionless group, the mass consumption number, was identified as the primary parameter governing production of excess pyrolyzate and a simple gray soot emissivity was found to well approximate a more rigorous analytic formulation. The reader is referred to Sections 1 and 2 for more specific information.
