- Abstract
- Spark arresters are fitted to many different types of engines from chain saws to steam trains. They have a specific job - to prevent dangerous sparks escaping and causting fires. But merely fitting a spark arrester will not in itself prevent fire - the spark arrester may be poorly designed, neglect may leave it inefficient or the exhaust system may be at fault elsewhere. This booklet has been prepared following investigaitons of spark arrestors initiated by the Bushfire Research Committee and carried out by the Mechanical Engineering Department of the University of Adelaide. It shows where you can expect trouble in the exhaust system and how you can avoid it.
