- Abstract
- The first phase of this work, using mice as the experimental animal, was completed. A full report was submitted in August 1985. The second phase of this work, using guinea pigs as the experimental animal was initiated. this model also has distance traveled and time to incapacitation features like the mouse model. However, we anticipate this model to be more sensitive to the evaluation of irritants in smoke than the mouse model. The entire apparatus was built and the intoxicating gas delivery and exposure system was completed by September. However, we encountered any difficulties in preventing leakage from the exposure system and this prevented us from obtaining good data on CO which is the first gas being investigated. We have now solved this problem and it appears that incapacitation time will be around 4 minutes for CO concentration (5,000 ppm) which fail to kill the animals for n exposure period of 30 minutes. this is a promising start and this new model will be our major effort in the coming year.
