- Abstract
- The intention of this project was to develop a baseline for a fire test procedure for water spray systems to be installed on vehicle decks on board ship. The report describes a large scale ro-ro vehicle deck fire test conducted at SP. The test set-up simulated acutal conditions on a vehicle deck. A small petrol pool fire was ignited and the fire spread to the cargo of a freight truck. A water spray system in accordance with IMO Res. A.123(V) was installed at the ceiling. The system was manually operated approximately a minute and a half after ignition of the pool fire. The second objective of the project was to establish quantitative "pass/fail" test criteria. The criteria recognised by IMO have been that; "The system should be capable of suppressing fires in flowing petrol, preventing fire spread from the vehicle of fire origin and reducing the temperature of exposure from the fire on the structure of the ship to an accpetable leval." Proposed quantitative pass/fail criteria are presented within this report.
