Abstract
Practical experience supported by theory has demonstrated that there are problems associated with fire in high buildings that may not have been adequately covered by existing building regulations. These problems relate particularly to the time required for evacuation and to vertical movement of smoke through a building. It has become evident as a result of the investigations of this subject that it is important to consider the design of each building as a whole taking into account the probable behavior of occupants and the contribution of firefighters.
