- Abstract
- The control of smoke from fire in various occupancies and specialized building types is a topic that has been addressed by the Model Building Codes for a number of years. However, not until the last decade have the Model Codes attempted to address in detail the desired performance criteria as well as rigid specific design criteria for "special" occupancies such as covered malls, high-rise and atrium buildings. The Model Building Codes have developed specific requirements devoted entirely to these "special" buildings which possess inherently unique fire protection/life safety problems with respect to other more conventional structures. The stipulated requirements for active and passive means of smoke control applicable to these three special occupancies will be discussed.
