Abstract
A question which is commonly asked of the consulting engineer is "what is the contirbution of product ABC to toxic hazard in a fire". This question requires the answers to a number of futher questions such as: 1) what is the definition of toxic hazard, 2) what is the implied use of the material; 3) what is the fire scenario. For example, for the scenario we can start out with two conditions: one, the case where the product can be ignited and will burn by itself, such as an upholstered chair. This requires no fire other than a small igniting source be it a match or cigarette. The second, the case where a large igniting source is required to involve the product, such as is required for vinyl wallpaper, or for the case where a combustible product is enclosed inside a wall cavity.
