- Abstract
- In 2002-2005, U.S. municipal fire departments responded to an estimated average of 1,090 barn structure fires, annually. These fires resulted in an annual average of 2 civilian deaths, 10 civilian injuries, and $32.4 million in direct property damage. These estimates are based on data from the U.S. Fire Administration's (USFA) National Fire Incident Reporting System (NFIRS) and the National Fire Protection Association's (NFPA) annual fire department experience survey. Almost a quarter of the fires in these properties were caused by heating equipment, of which heat lamps were the leading heating equipment involved.
