Abstract
Due to the ban on the production of the fire suppressant CF₃Br there is an ongoing search for alternative agents. Metal compounds have been found to be up to several orders of magnitude more effecive flame suppressants than halogens. In particular, iron pentacarbonyl (Fe(CO)₅, is one of the stongest inhibitors ever found. Its inhibition action was first studied by measuring the burning velocity of premixed flames. Recently, Fe(CO)₅ was used for experiments in a flat flame burner, using the heat absorbed by the burner as a critical for the inhibitor's performance; and iron pentacarbonyl was used in premixed and counterflow diffusion flames with the burning velocity and the extinction strain rate being measured.
