Abstract
It is widely held that William the Conqueror decreed that all fires should be extinguished at sunset by placing a metal cover over the flame. This decree of 'Couve Feu' is believed to the origin of the word curfew in use today. The law relating to fire protection has been developed over many years and one of the earliest Statute laws relating to fire protection was enacted in the reign of Queen Anne in 1707 and was entitled, "An Act for the Better Preventing Mishciefs That May Happen by Fire". The whole question of fire legislation in Great Britain was examined by the Holdoyd Committee and in their report published in 1970, it was acknowledged that the legislative patten extant at that time was fragmented.
