Abstract
Fire sprinkler systems require an automatic water supply to perform their function of automatic fire suppression. the national sprinkler installation standard, NFPA 13, states that, where volume and pressure are adequte, "connection to a reliable water works systems shall be an acceptable water supply source." It is the purpose of this article to briefly investigate the mechanism for such connection to a water supply system, specifically the fire service mains and lead-in piping installed on provate property. This will include an analysis of the requirements of accepted national standards, historical practices, and recommendations of major insurance authorities concerned with proper fire protection. Key issues for evaluation are whether or not domestic connections should be permitted to be taken from such piping and whether or not such underground piping can and should be included within the scope of licensing of fire sprinkler contractors.
