Abstract
In aircraft accidents where occupants are not fatally injured, loss of life can result from post-crash fires caused by the ignition of the volatile JET-A fuel. In an effort to reduce fatalities caused by postcrash fires in survivable accidents, the FAA is investigating the possibility of modifying the characteristics of JET-A fuel. One method being considered is modifying the base fuel by the addition of an anti-misting agent which would reduce or eliminate the tendency of the fuel to mist and rapidly burn when forcibly expelled from the fuel tanks and exposed to open flame.
