Abstract
The main legislative controls over fire safety provision in buildings, in the U. K., are embodied in building regulations and the Fire Precautions Act 1971. Both are administered, and enforced, by authorities within the structure of local government. Many other statutes include some aspects of building fire safety and these may be specific to one building type (e.g. cinemas) or concerned with a specific hazard (e.g. the use of flammable liquid). The main changes under discussion involve the Building Regulations 1976, for England and Wales excluding inner London, and the Fire Precautions Act 1971. The building regulations are being simplified in language and presentation and opportunities are being created for corporate members of the professions in the construction industry to take responsibility for ensuring compliance.
