- Abstract
- Public concerns about smoke toxicity have increased over the last few years and for a number of reasons. Some believe the hazards of fire have been increased by the introduction of many new materials and products into the built environment, many of which are synthetics. Others believe that smoke detectors and quick response sprinklers can be used to eliminate concerns about the potential fire hazards posed by materials. Many others are confused by all the apparently conflicting reports, statements, and so forth that have appeared on this topic in the media. In fact, many states and some localities are even considering regulatory measures ranging from bans of particular materials to studies of the options for reducing the hazards from fire.
