Abstract
Over the past two decades, fire scientists have developed a variety of methods to measure the toxic potency of the smokes from burning materials. Each of these methods uses small samples of a single material or a commercial produict. The sample is forced to burn or pyrolyze under set conditions. Rats or mice (generally) are then exposed to the combustion products, collectively or as they are generated.
