Abstract
Downward flame spread velocity over a thin cellulose sheet was measured from the vertical to the horizontal positions under external radiant fluxes of 0, 0.9, 1.4 and 2.0 W/cm2. The flame spread velocity had little dependency on the angle of inclination of the sheet with the stable lower flame. When the lower flame became unstable, wavy flames, cellular flmes and flame rolls were observed below the lower surface. With these unstable lower flames, the flame spread velocity increased significantly reaching several cm/s. Qualitative analysis based on the Rayleigh instability mechanism describes well the effects of the inclination angle and the external flux on the instability of the lower flame.
