- Abstract
- Civil defense organizers, municipal fire departments, industrial emergency teams, and other individuals and groups who will be responsible for dealing with an amergency where the hazards of ionizing radiation are involved must be concerned with the problems of appropriate respiratory protection. The problems facing these persons are not particularly different from those confronting the rapidly expanding number of researchers who use radioiosotopes in universities, hospitals, and industries and who have been called upon to determine appropriate respiratory protection under unusual operating conditions or in an emergency. Now, however, extensive practical experience with this type of hazard derived from operations within the atomic energy program is available. By drawing freely on this experience it is possible to postulate the basic principles from which a satisfactory program of emergency respiratory proteciton (where a radiation hazard is invovled) can be devleloped.
