Abstract
World-wide interest in the use of fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP) reinforcement in concrete structures, as an alternative to traditional steel reinforcement, has increased significantly in recent years. FRP reinforcement offers many advantages over steel, such as high strength and durability (non-corrosive). While FRP reinforcement is mainly used in bridges, there is enormous potential for its use in multi-storey buildings, parking garages and industrial structures. Before FRP can be used in structural members in buildings, the ability of these materials to meet stringent fire-resistance requirements, prescribed in building codes, must be established. At present, there is very little information available on the performance of FRP-reinforced structural members in fires.
