occupant survival; smoke and sound measurements; radiant temperature of openings
Abstract
Since a burning building can ignite neighboring structures if the radiation reaching the exposed surfaces is sufficiently intense, building codes usually specify a minimum separation between buildings. It is possible to calculate the separation which is required to prevent fire spread by radiation if the following data are available: 1. The intensity of the radiation emitted by a burning building; 2. The radiant energy flux which will ignite the exposed wooden parts of an adjacent building.
