- Abstract
- Fires take an enormous toll in the United States. In an average year, loses from fire include: 5,200 fatalities, 29,000 injuries, and a cost to the economy in excess of $120 billion. Research aimed at cutting those costs is being conducted by the National Institute of Standards and Technology's (NIST) Building and Fire Research Laboratory (BFRL) in Gaithersburg, MD.
