Abstract
Anyone who has calculated a sprinkler system to determine the flow and riser pressure requirements for a large number of heads knows that it is a tedious and time-consuming process. However, such calculation has become a frequent task for fire protection engineers concerned with the protection of modern industry's high demand hazards and occupancies. During 1954, the Factory MutualEngineering Division spent considerable time and effort in the development of a simpler means of quickly and easily determining the flow characteristics of sprinkler systems. The project resulted in the development of the flow curves presented in this paper. The relation of quantities and pressures shown in the flow curves agrees closely with the results of extensive flow tests of branch lines and sprinler systems conducted by the Factory Mutual Laboratories in 1953.
