- Abstract
- A technique for securing information on the combustion process at supersonic speeds has been developed by the Bureau with the support of the Navy Bureau of Weapons and the Air Force Office of Scientific Research. The technique involves firing a missile at hypersonic velocities through a combustible gas. High-speed schlieren photography is used to obtain data concerning shape and detachment distance of the shock wave, gas density, and other effects. Thse data are evaluated to derive information on the combustion process in the vicinity of the missile.
