Abstract
The rate at which flame spreads over combustible surfaces inside a building controls the rapidity with which small unattended fires will grow beyond possibility of suppression or of escape by occupants. The flammability of the contents of the building is important if the contents or furnishings are afire; likewise, the flammability of the surface coverings of the walls is imporant if the fire is on or adjacent to the walls. Combustible wall-surface materials lend additional fire hazard to buildings in which they may be used, and, because they are subject to control by the builder and building regulaitons, their fire properties have been given increased attention during recent years. Of particular importance are the spread-of-flame characteristics of wallboards evaluated in terms commensurate with fire hazard.
