- Abstract
- The article describes basic principles of extreme value estimation, and probabilistic, statistical, and engineering procedures applicable to meteorological extremes. It discusses methods for reducing sampling errors in the estimation of meteorological extremes, the influence of the type of application on the estimation procedure, and the role of simulated data. Applications to wind, snow, ice and waves are briefly surveyed. In particular, important recent resluts on the best fitting distribution for wind speeds and their implications for structural realiability are mentioned.
