- The inhalation toxicity of combustion products as a primary hazard in the fire environment has become a major concern in the last few years. Thomas addressed the problem in 1971 in a Symposium on Occupational Health and Hazads of the Fire Service in which he stated that 80% of the victims of fire are not touched by the flame, but die as a result of exposure to smoke. Thomas also prepared a rather extensive bibliography relevant to the toxicity of fire and inhalation injury.
