- Abstract
- A mathematical zone model of the interaction between roof vents and sprinklers has been developed in a joint project by the Fire Research Station and Colt International Ltd., following a suggestion by Heselden. It is an extension of the simple zone model generally used for the design of roof venting systems, and enables the radial temperature distribution near to a ceiling with a fire beneath to be calculated. Although the model hasonly been partially validated, it may be used to indicate the relative importance of many of the factors determining the operation of sprinklers: the dimensions of the compartment, the rate of growth and heat output of the fire, the triggering characteristics of the sprinklers, and venting.
