Abstract
It is reasonable to assume that the development of flame retardant textiles would be accelerated if a more complete understanding of the fundamental mechanisms of burning and thermal decomposition were available. In studying the mechanisms of thermal decomposition most researchers have concentrted their efforts on characterizing the gaseous and condensable decompositon products. Recently studies at TRI have revealed that considerable inforamtion about flammability can be obtained from studies of the residual chars. This Note on Research describes the infrared spectra technique that was used and summarizes some of the results that have been obtained.
