Abstract
As part of a task sponsored by the US Naval Sea Systems Command, the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) conducted a demonstration of a thermal imaging camera at the Fleet Training Center, Norfolk, on 15-16 December 1982. The camera, which is manufactured by the English Electric Valve Co., Chelmsford, England, is designed to enable firefighters to see through smoke. Although it was developd for civil firefighting brigades and hence has not been hardened to shipboard handling standards, the Royal Navy purchased 90 of the devices following the SHEFFIELD incident.
