Abstract
The objective of this research is to establish a simple and analytical framework for the simulation of radiation heat transfer in complex fire phenomena. From an experimental investigation and theoretical analysis, approximate formulations have been developed for practical engineering calculations. During the past year (4/1/87-3/31/88), the research has been direcfted towards the following three primary topics: 1) experimental and theoretical determination of the infrared radiation properties of hydrocarbon gases pyrolyzed from the combustion of common plastic materials; 2) development of a simplified methodology to investigate thermal radiation interactions inside pool fires and plumes; 3) experimental and theoretical investigation of the radiation characteristics of agglomerated soot particles. Research progress accomplished during the past year will be described in the following sections.
