- Abstract
- This paper discusses the role that experimental fire studies play in research, assessment of performance, testing, design and regulation. Experimental fire studies are a necessary part of all these activities and will remain so even in the face of advances in mathematical modelling of fire behavior. To illustrate the use of experimental fire studies in all these activities, the Australian experience in the area of the assessment and control of the fire hazards of wall linings in buildings is described. This experience spans over thirty years and involves product assessment, test development, test validation and regulation, and will involve modelling in the future.
