- Abstract
- The cone calorimeter developed at the National Bureau of Standards (NBS), now the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), is being adapted to toxicological studies of smoke of burning polymers. With this apparatus specimens of a given surface area and thickness are subjected to a known irradiance level in a known compartment volume which is ventilated at a known rate. The decomposition products are then delivered to an exposure chamber for toxicological evaluation and for analysis of principal toxicants such as CO, HCN, CO2 and oxygen depletion.
