Abstract
This paper reviews the facilities available at the Railway Technical Centre, Derby for fire testing rail vehicles and components to permit design and construction decisions to be taken. The facilities provide a progressive route for materials selection based not on small sample tsting but on actual components and realistic sources. Passenger safety is the prime consideration in fire work, but this aspect must be treated in unison with other safety and design requirements. Full size tests are therefore conducted around existing or proposed configurations with instrumentation positioned accordingly. This presents problems in the setting up of experiments and the interpretation of the results. Detailed considerations of one such full scale test programme demonstrates some of these problems and indicates how and why instrumentation was positioned.
