- Abstract
- Recent research at NIST on the visibility of exit signs in clear and smoky conditions is discussed. First, results on the visibility of directional indicators such as arrows and chevrons are presented for emergency lighting conditions. Analysis of these data indicates that when combined with the word EXIT, a chevron should be at least 1.75 to 2.25 inches high for visibility at 100 feet (as recommended by NFPA 101). Effects of color, contrast, and configuration are discussed. Second, data on the visibility of conventional and electroluminescent signs in clear and smoke conditions are presented. Minimum luminance requirements are discussed.
