Abstract
To achieve greater fire safety it is important to take into account that burning behavior is not a material property but a complex interaction of the composite and the environment. This experience is demonstrated by the investigations of a special PUR-foam mattress. According to various Government regulations new composites and upholstery combinations for special purposes were developed, which are resistent to ignition sources like cigarettes and matches as well as woodcribs, paperbags and waste baskets. One of this new products is the PUR foam mattress, which proved resistent to all higher intensity ignition sources as internationally specified at present. Special attention is drawn to the accompanying phenomena of a fire as smoke development acute toxicity and demonstrated that their potential hazard is considerably reduced with the new developed constructions of higher fire resistance.
