Abstract
The findings of the research described in the forthcoming pages are preliminary in nature and are intended to be an addition to, not a substitution for, current fire safety principles and practices. These findings take the form of design guidelines and estimates of the cost implications of using such guidelines. The guidelines were developed as a result of statistical analyses of data describing past multifamily residential fires. Because the data studied described large fires only, the results obtained must be considered suggestive only and should be subjected to further tests when more comprehensive data becomes available. Nevertheless, the guidelines have potential for educing loss of life in residential fires and for that reason alone are presented here for consideration and review by others. The cost increases (over conventional practices) associated with the implementation of each guideline represent new building construction costs only. No significant impact on operation and maintenance costs is expected. Also, each cost figure is an index and needs to be adjusted for time and plance before using.
