Abstract
The objective of this project is to determine the area of bodies burned and the degree of injury as a functon of the garments worn by the bictim, by attempting to model real life accidents by burning garment assemblies on full size mannequins. The maximum temperatures on the mannequin surface are measured by temperature indicators (papers which change color at certain temperatures); these measurements are supplemented by time-temperature recorder traces obtained with thermocouples. A fairly good correlation was found to exist between these two measurements, and further studies to translate them into actual burn injury potential are planned. In the meantime, the relative injury hazard due to garment assembly variations can be estimated by comparison of the size of the areas of the mannequin raised to elevated temperatures, because the area of body burned relates to mortality.
