- Abstract
- The burning behavior of aircraft seating materials has been evaluated in a joint CAA/FRS test programme. Several types of fabric and foam blocking layers and some advanced full depth foams were tested in comparison with a typical existing material combination. The programme progressed from an initial small-scale test method, through sub-scale testing up to full-scale tests on simulated airline triple seats. A certification test procedure proposed by the Federal Aviation Administration was also evaluated. Considerable improvements in performance were demonstrated. Results also showed that it could be inadvisable to consider only one criterion when setting acceptance standards. It was also concluded that a radiant panel heat source was preferable to direct flame impingement, as it enabled meaningful analysis of the emissions to be made.
