- Abstract
- Smokdering is a combustion process most frequently encountered in permeable fuels that have a large surface to volume ratio together with a low bulk density, which lowers the thermal conductivity of the fuel mass and allows ready access of oxygen to the fuel surface. Such properties facilitate self-sustained combustion at low volumetric rates of heat release. Solid wood is a rather marginal qualifier under these guidelines and yet it smolders quite well under the right circumstances.
