Abstract
The objective of this project is the study of the effect of fiber choice, fabric construction, garment style and fit, and outerwear and underwear combination, on the probability and extent of burn injuries. For this purpose, two full size mannequins were fireproofed and instrumented. Preliminary burnings of various garment assemblies were conducted, and the results evaluated in terms of maximum temperatures obtained on various parts of the body, measurement of temperature-time relationships, observations of the burning patterns, and analysis of the remainder of the garments. The tentative results are used, along with the description of related work in the literature, in the planning of future experiments. Methods tests show that a bar with a thermal gradient can be used to determine time for ignition. An electric spark is useful to secure the start of burning.
