Abstract
The material contained in this report deals in large part with the behavior of multicomponent systems with a view toward detection of interactions during the decomposition and/or burning of such systems. For several flammability parameters attention has been focused on the determination of what would be normal, noninteracting behavior so that deviations from such can be detected and analyzed. The work includes studies of the autoignition, flame temperature, and burning rate characteristics of two-component polymer systems and, in addition, introduces a new technique for evaluating unrestrained, upward burning behavior by continuous weight loss measurement on burning fabrics. Aside from the study of multicomponent systems, this latter technique has been applied to the comparison of flame-retardant materials with their untreated controls as well as comparisons among a number of untreated fabrics. The discussion of autoignition also includes work not related to multicomponent systems, such as the effects of inert heat sinks, flowing atmospheres, and flame-retardant add-on in DAP-cotton systems.
