Abstract
Experiments were conducted with the purpose of deriving data on walking velocities and walking pattern on stairs during evacuation specially for upwards movement. The experiments were carried out using students as test persons. Data was extracted using a video analysing technique. The test persons were filmed with a video camera and the information on the videotape was converted to a computer data file using a computer video capture card. The computer files were used as input data in the Persias software which was developed to calculate velocities, distances and twisting rates for persons or objects moving in different situations. The study provided velocity data for walking both up- and downward staircases. Also spiral staircases were invesigated. The result shows a good agreement with earlier data related to velocity. The interperson distance between people seems not be so important on stairs as on horizontal walkways.
