Abstract
A numerical technique has been developed for the calculation of the temperature history of protected steel columns in fire. This technique was used for the theoretical simulation of several fire tests. A comparison of experimental and theoretical information clearly showed that the technique is capable of yielding acceptable accuracy. Some basic assumptions usedin previous works have been examined in the light of several numerical studies. It has been proved that the mechanisms of heat transfer between the protection and steel core has little effect on the structural performance of the steel core, and that every per cent of moisture in the protection increases the time of fire endurance of the column by about three per cent.
