- Abstract
- The problems that arise in fire research are varied, often extremely complex, and usually encompass a number of different scientific disciplines. They range from small fires in enclosures for which it is important to understand (and ultimately to control) the rate of spread, to massive fires such as forest fires and urban fires resulting from, for example, earthquakes; again, we would like to understand such fires sufficiently to be able to control their spreading and to prescribe effective fire-fighting strategies. Many aproaches have been, and still are being, taken to gain an understanding of various aspects of fires and to develop predictive tools in an attempt to gain better control. These approaches include experimental, analytical and computational.
