Abstract
The most prevalent apparatus in use for obtaining data on the smoke production tendencies of materials is the NBS Smoke Chamber. Exploratory testing with simple materials in the NBS Smoke Chamber has indicated significant short-comings in obtaining apparatus-independent data for use in modeling. Most of those difficulties are associated with the fact that this chamber is a static box. Recently a new heat release rate apparatus--the Cone Calorimeter--has been developed at the National Bureau of Standards (NBS), which allows improved heat release rate measurements to be made. Smoke measuring instrumentation has now been developed for use with the Cone Calorimeter, allowing smoke data to be gathered in a dynamic, flow-through environment. Smoke measurements made in the Cone Calorimeter on upholstered furniture specimens are presented and are compared to full-scale test data on the same materials.
